Online RegistrationWinning off-road races was the driving force behind Mickey Thompson's innovations in tyre design. This dedication to performance is why Mickey Thompson Tires designed PowerPly, a tyre construction that responds faster. PowerPly is a carcass construction that lessens the twist in the tyre. Less twist means a faster response to your steering.
We recently put the latest addition to the Mickey Thompson range, the ATZP3, to the test against two other leading American-made brands to evaluate how the PowerPly product performed against the more traditional radial ply carcass technology.
In the real world you don't drive on race tracks every day, but by using a controlled environment and a professional evaluator you're guaranteed to get repeatable results. Each brand of tyre was evaluated and compared in different situations, through 3 tests that are designed to simulate the real world situations you could encounter on any given day. Each test is designed to put the tyres through a particular 'real life' situation, to measure their handling and responsiveness.
Based on the performance of all three popular American brands, over the series of tests, the evaluator deemed that the Mickey Thompson ATZP3 with PowerPly consistently performed above the competitor tyres. It's latest technology, carcass, compound and tread design proved to be superior all round for overall handling, responsiveness and driveability.
As the testing showed, there are differences in the time it takes for tyres to respond. Mickey Thompson Tires designed a tyre that responds faster. PowerPly is a carcass construction that features a directional ply running slightly across the two radial plies linking them together, strengthening the tyre and reducing its tendency to twist.
It's this third ply, the PowerPly, that makes all the difference - as less twist means a faster response to your steering. Put simply, PowerPly makes the tyre handle better and is safer.
