Our Mate, Ivan Robertson

"I started racing back in about 1981 in an old EJ Holden ute. I had a break from off-road racing when the kids came along, and for a while there I raced quad bikes and two wheelers with them. Once the kids got their licenses I thought, ‘right, they can take themselves to the races, I’m going back to off-road racing!’ I was out off-road racing for ten years, and it was a lot different when I came back in 2011.

When I started using MTZ P3s on the track, the stopping distance was the first thing I noticed. I had to learn where to brake again. I pulled up… and then I had to accelerate a little to get to the corner. I thought ‘Man, I’ve pulled up too early.’

I struggled to get traction when stopping with the previous tyres I had on my trophy truck, but when I put Mickeys on I realised that the problem wasn’t bad brakes. The problem was that my previous tyres weren’t doing the job. The Mickeys really hang on, the difference in braking is just phenomenal.

The other big difference is with cornering. You’re pushing about 600 horse power, and these tyres just push harder and harder. They hold all the way through the corner really well.

I use Mickey All Terrains on my farm as well. We have 40,000 acres in Victoria, and we’re a bit hard on tyres out there. I put Mickeys on the farm vehicles and now we hardly ever see our tyre dealer anymore, we’re just not getting the punctures that we used to. With other brands we’d see at least one flat a week, so we had to buy plugs. By the end of it, those tyres looked like porcupines!

Nowadays I get double the tyre life out of my Mickeys, and no punctures at all."
